2020 Announcement

We are pleased to announce that The Gilbert & Sullithon 2020 will take place on Saturday 13 June 2020 at Birmingham University.

The concept of the “Sullithon” is to raise money through the sponsorship of participants in the “Scratch Concert” style event, singing through all thirteen Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, one after another, with only a 10-minute break between each operetta!  Starting at 10.00 am on the Saturday this marathon event takes approximately 21 hours to complete, finishing at approximately 7.00 am on the Sunday morning.  A good time to get breakfast and go home and sleep!

In 1990 the original marathon Gilbert & Sullithon raised £12,000 for Children in Need!  About 250 people took part from all over Birmingham and the West Midlands (and beyond).  Twenty years’ later we were asked to organise another such event by the Birmingham Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, Cllr Michael Wilkes and Mrs Vivienne Wilkes, for their chosen charities. On that occasion, we raised £10,000.  The proceeds of the Sullithon 2020 will go to The Rotary Club of Birmingham for distribution to various charities (see below).

The venue for Sullithon 2020 is the wonderful Elgar Concert Hall at Birmingham University, which provides seating for a large audience as well as a performance area for several hundred singers and musicians.  Parking is free and there are good public transport links.  There are also refreshment facilities and break-out areas for the performers.

Imagine, if you would, the sound of 200 or more ladies (we hope) “Tripping Hither and Tripping Thither” and maybe a chorus of 100+ men for the Chorus of Peers (Iolanthe)!!  There is a registration fee for participants of £20 which will include a souvenir programme.  If you are interested in taking part, in what promises to be a wonderful feat of singing, please complete the attached/enclosed registration form and return it to us at the address below.  Please contact us in any of the following ways should you have any queries or require any further details.
